19 Nov Hypnosis for Cancer Treatment
“Your body’s ability to heal is greater than anyone has permitted you to believe.”– R.B.
Hypnotherapy can be very effective in supporting patients who are undergoing cancer treatment. Hypnosis combined with regular medical treatment helps cancer patients with pain management, appetite control, nausea, and insomnia. It also provides much needed emotional support.
Cancer is a shattering diagnosis. Cancer patients have a lot to deal with as they begin treatment. Hypnosis can ease negative attitudes about chemotherapy, frequent changes in medication, unpleasant side effects, and social stigmas.
Through hypnotherapy, both family members and patients are better able to cope with the diagnosis, overcome fears, manage stress and anxiety, and even grow more positive and confident. Together they can create the loving, supportive network and healing home environment essential to recovery*.
Hypnosis for Cancer Pain Management
In 1997, the National Institutes of Health Technology assessment panel determined hypnosis to be an effective, noninvasive, and inexpensive method of relieving pain, including the pain associated with advanced forms of cancer. The study also found that hypnosis is more effective than biofeedback, a form of cognitive behavioral training that attempts to change a patient’s negative thought pattern about pain into a positive one.
Hypnotherapy is also beneficial for cancer patients who avoid taking enough pain medication to relieve their pain because they fear becoming addicted. Finally, hypnosis helps patients who fear dying, a fear that can block their path toward recovery and a positive life.
Hypnosis and the Mind/Body Connection
It has been well-documented that the use of imagery and other hypnotic techniques can boost the immune system which is extremely important for someone coping with cancer. It is also no secret that our thoughts affect how our bodies react under stressful circumstances. Reframing is a technique used in hypnosis to create a new picture of a situation so that an old idea or negative thought can be seen in a new and constructive way. Hypnosis can help cancer patients reframe the picture of what it means to live with cancer. It can create a harmonious mind-body condition that promotes a greater sense of well-being.
At Hypnosis-LA, we teach cancer patients throughout the Los Angeles area how to shift their thoughts toward positive outcomes – to think about healing their bodies and to focus on the fact that they will get through this difficult stage of their lives.
Note: Depending on your situation, you may need to provide a referral from your physician or psychiatrist.
